Repentance is the biblical word for change. We’re headed full bore one direction. We discover that we’re on the course of sin headed toward destruction. So we stop, turn 180 degrees, and head the other direction toward life, godliness, and the God who loves us and reconciled us to Himself through his Son, Jesus.
In a conflict, we want something, but our desires are thwarted. As a result, our internal passions get riled up. This is good news in one sense: we often need to be aroused from the lethargy and worldliness in which we so easily become trapped. However, it is bad news in that usually we are aroused first in worldly directions. We put on the gloves, step into the ring, and go for the knockout blow with whomever we’re fighting.
In the first sermon in the Fight Fair! series, I seek wisdom in the midst of conflict from the powerful passage in James 4:1-10. James elequently describes what causes fights and quarrels (vv. 1-6), and then richly describes what repentance looks like (vv. 7-10). This is a passage worth memorizing and meditating upon when you find yourself embroiled in a conflict.
If you want to go deeper into what causes conflict, and how conflicts can be resolved biblically, I highly recommend the resources of Peacemaker Ministries. They have books, articles, blog posts and more. They also have a great children’s resource for teaching kids how to resolve conflict.
May the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, and in your relationships (Colossians 3:15).
Best,
Shane
